Description
In the 16th and 17th centuries scholars of the western world increasingly turned their gaze toward the sky. Astronomers and researchers who had previously studied the heavens with the naked eye were suddenly able to gain entirely new insights through the first telescopes. A new scientific era began yet it was marked by caution as the Church closely watched every deviation from the accepted worldview and heretical ideas were severely punished.
In Galileo Galilei you join these courageous thinkers. You take on the role of a historical figure striving to become the most renowned astronomer of the era. Observe the sky discover constellations and celestial bodies write books and teach at the university to gain fame influence and knowledge.
The central mechanism of the game is the alignment of the telescope. Through this alignment you choose your actions and define your strategic path. You can make new discoveries advance academically or secure decisive advantages.
When observing the sky you must always choose between constellations and more expensive but more rewarding celestial bodies. To conduct successful research you spend light dice in specific colors. As a reward you gain victory points and additional bonuses. Some discoveries are considered heretical and draw the attention of the Inquisition placing inquisitors into your cellar.
You may attempt to convince the inquisitors of your work reducing their influence. If you fail an interrogation occurs that damages your reputation. At the end of the game you score points for your progress on the university tracks and lose points for committed heresies.
