Description
In Ingenious, players take turns placing colored domino-style tiles onto the game board and scoring points for extending lines of matching colors. The key twist is that a player’s final score is determined by their lowest-scoring color, not their highest. This means success depends on balancing all six colors rather than specializing in just a few.
The game includes 120 tiles, each made up of two connected hexes. Every hex shows one of six colors, and most tiles feature two different colors. Each player starts with a rack holding six tiles. On a turn, a player places one tile onto two empty hex spaces on the board.
Scoring is calculated separately for each hex of the placed tile. For each color, the player scores one point for every adjacent hex of the same color and for every hex of that color in a straight line extending outward. If a player reaches 18 points in a color, they immediately take another turn.
At the end of the turn, the player refills their rack back to six tiles. Before refilling, if none of the tiles in the rack contain the player’s currently lowest-scoring color, they may discard all tiles and draw six new ones from the bag.
The game ends when no more tiles can be placed on the board or when a player reaches 18 points in all six colors. Players then compare their lowest color scores, and the player with the highest minimum score wins.
Ingenious also includes rules for solo play and for team play. In the team variant, two teams of two players compete, partners cannot see each other’s tiles, and teams share a combined score that can reach up to 36 instead of 18.
