Description
In Fields of Arle, designed by Uwe Rosenberg, one to two players take on the role of farmers in the small and peaceful town of Arle in East Frisia. The surrounding countryside, rich in flax, offers prosperity and opportunity. The game spans four and a half years, with changing seasons that shape which actions and possibilities are available.
Throughout the game, players develop their farms by managing land, resources, and production. They build dikes to protect against flooding, drain bogs to harvest peat, and convert land into fields for crops, forests, buildings, or livestock. Whether focusing heavily on flax farming or diversifying into many activities, players must carefully plan how to best use their land.
At the start of each half year, players decide how to spend their time. They can improve tools, enhance livestock breeding, expand vehicle fleets, or focus on other productive activities. Seasonal differences matter: animals are cared for, flax is harvested, sheep are sheared, and resources are managed according to the time of year. At the end of each half year, vehicles must be unloaded and both family and animals must be fed.
As farms grow and goods accumulate, players can transport products to distant markets. A larger fleet allows more goods to be shipped, increasing travel experience and earning victory points over the course of the game. By balancing farm development, vehicle expansion, and seasonal planning, players pursue prosperity through many possible paths.
